from the 5.3 Changelog:
"Removed all zend_extension_* php.ini directives. Zend extensions are now always 
loaded using zend_extension directive. (Derick)"
but the documentation doesn't mention this in the changelog section for those 
inis:
http://www.php.net/manual/en/ini.core.php#ini.sect.path-directory
