The 'Return values' says:

Returns TRUE on success or FALSE on failure. For SELECT, SHOW, DESCRIBE or EXPLAIN mysqli_query() will return a result object. 

Maybe a better wording could be clearer, similar to that:

Returns FALSE on failure. If success, returns a result object for  SELECT, SHOW, DESCRIBE or EXPLAIN and TRUE for the rest of queries.
