After running ./buildconf within php4, I get this failure on the current CVS tree.

Making all in Zend
make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/local/src/Zend'
/bin/sh ./config.status --recheck
./config.status: ./config.status: No such file or directory
make[1]: *** [config.status] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/local/src/Zend'
make: *** [all-recursive] Error 1

was this a fresh checkout or did it occure after an update?

if it was a fresh checkout:
did you run ./configure after buildconf and before make?
buildconf does generate ./configure, but does not run
it ... so that the needed config.status file is never
generated

You should do ./cvsclean then ./buildconf. If you still have this bug with current version, please reopen.
