accessing the mysql causes error.

compiles in : 
--with-apache=/root/devel/apache_1.3.12/ --with-mysql=../mysql-3.22.27-pc-linux-gnu-i686/ --enable-calendar --enable-ftp
--with-sybase-ct=/opt/sybase-11.9.2/ --enable-xml --disable-debug --with-pdflib=/usr/ --enable-trans-sid --enable-yp

but the MySQL version running on the system is 3.23.12c
