in ext/ldap/config.m4 there is the following check

  PHP_CHECK_LIBRARY(ldap, sasl_version,

sasl_version symbol is not really found in "ldap" library but in sasl2, that is correctly added soon after with

PHP_ADD_LIBRARY_WITH_PATH(sasl2, $LDAP_SASL_LIBDIR, LDAP_SHARED_LIBADD)



I think you mean 

PHP_CHECK_LIBRARY(sasl2, sasl_version

It's actually intentional. What configure line did you use when it fails..? The library is passed to the test via the 3rd parameter to PHP_CHECK_LIBRARY() macro and if the ldap library is linked with it, then the test will pass, otherwise it fails. :)
