The documentation on proc_open about the $descriptorspec argument seems incomplete: "The currently supported pipe types are file and pipe."

Actually the descriptors can not only be pipes of files, but also any resource or a pty:

$descriptorspec = array(
 0 => stream_socket_server("unix://mysocket"),
 1 => array("pty", "w"),
 2 => STDERR,
);
