SUMMARY
I'm giving up (for now) trying to get a DSO module going for php4. Perhaps there is something here that would indicate a problem with the package, and not my system or something I'm doing. I saw ample opportunities to clean up compiler warnings, if nothing else :)

The last events I experienced before throwing up my hands:

   make[4]: *** [libmysql_client.la] Error 139

kernel: Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 00000014

I will do my best to be helpful if you reply needing further information or have any suggestions. [I'll also try to keep an eye on this coolio bug tracking system]

DETAIL
This might be time wasted but since this is a release candidate, and
since I'm about to throw up my hands and use a RPM, I figured I'd report
in on my complete failure to get php4 to build.

It's probably something dumb that I am doing (I'm only a novice
sysadmin), or something wrong with my system (new RedHat 6.2 build on a
P-133 with 96megs). I'd be happy to supply additional infomation as
required. Yes, for this system I *should* just use RPM as make takes a long time... but I like the control and learning opportunities.

You can refer to the attached output (configure and make logged into
>file 2>&1, and my system log). I want PHP4 running with PostgreSQL (installed last night, seems really healthy and ready to go) and that's about all I know. I disabled building XML into the module (trying DSO maybe I'd have better luck with static?) because of a previous compile error (another day, perhaps).

./configure --with-apxs=/usr/local/apache/bin/apxs --with-pgsql
--disable-xml

./make

Result was a nice batch of horrible system messages about bad compile. My prior attempt resulted in kernel panic (I did wipe it all clean for this report, start over from scratch with tar zxvf php...)

I'm at a loss and will now retreat to php3 courtesy of RedHat

This is quite old bug report.

Have you tried more recent (release) versions of PHP4?
Does these problems persist?

I have myself compiled and have running php4.0.1pl2 on Redhat 6.2
and I have not had any problems.
