i get this in the output of ./configure

Right, this option doesn\'t exist and you used it... and ./configure tells you in a friendly way that you\'re using an option that has no effect

but configure has it as an option

sudo ./configure --help | grep readline
  --with-libedit[=DIR]    Include libedit readline replacement (CLI/CGI only)
  --with-readline[=DIR]   Include readline support (CLI/CGI only)

That is interesting - what is your full configure line?
