In strict error reporting mode, this following sample code produces warnings:

Strict Standards: Only variables should be passed by reference...
PHP Strict Standards:  Only variables should be passed by reference...

As you can imagine calling select a few thousand times can generate some unwanted results :)

Reproduce code:
---------------
<?php
  $sock = socket_create(AF_INET, SOCK_STREAM, SOL_TCP);
  socket_select(array($sock),$w=NULL,$e=NULL,0);
?>

Expected result:
----------------
No warnings emitted.

Actual result:
--------------
Strict Standards: Only variables should be passed by reference...
