compiling php-5.2.4
./configure --prefix=/usr/local/php5 --with-apxs2=/usr/local/apache2/bin/apxs --with-config-file-path=/usr/local/php5 --with-gd --with-png-dir=/usr/lib --with-jpeg-dir=/usr/lib --with-zlib-dir=/usr/lib --enable-ftp --with-mysql --enable-force-cgi-redirect --disable-cgi --with-openssl=/usr/local/ssl --enable-mbstring --with-mcrypt

/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lltdl
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [libphp5.la] Error 1

compiling php-5.2.3 on the same machine doesn't produce error

First of all: You're passing wrong paths to configure options.
You're not supposed to pass /lib in any of those options. Remove those from each one of them.

And before you run configure with the proper configure line, use CLEAN sources!

the problem is caused by --with-mcrypt without it no problems.
libmcrypt, libmcrypt-devel and php-mcrypt are installed and up to date.
What is the problem?

FYI: I tested with my Fedora5 machine and it works just fine.
Why did you install php-mcrypt? You're compiling from sources, you don't need that. Are you sure you don't have some old mcrypt version installed? e.g. from sources under /usr/local ?

could be that you are missing libtool  make sure you install the package
