(n)char and (n)varchar columns has a limit of 256 bytes. This is a limitation in ntwdblib.dll from Microsoft and can't be fixed in the PHP extension.

Workaround: use php_dblib.dll as a drop in replacement for php_mssql.dll. This extension is build on the FreeTDS version of dblib and does not have the same limitations.
