On my system is installed:
Linux RedHat 6.1 
Apache / 1.3.9 ( Unix ) PHP / 3.0.9 
Oracle 8.1.5 i 

There is a following problem: at completion any of scripts, containing 
reference to Oracle, In memory are lost numerous processes - zombie:

oracle   30019 29946  0 12:40 ?        00:00:27 /usr/local/apache/bin/httpd
oracle   30025 30019  0 12:40 ?        00:00:00 [oracle <defunct>]
....
....
....
oracle   30031 29953  0 12:40 ?        00:00:00 [oracle <defunct>]

Tell me please, how to decide a problem?

We are sorry, but can not support PHP 3 related problems anymore.
Momentum is gathering for PHP 5, and we think supporting PHP 3 will
lead to a waste of resources which we want to put into getting PHP 5
ready. Ofcourse PHP 4 will will continue to be supported for the
forseeable future.

afaik thies added signal handlers to prevent this at least for php 4
