Hi,

To ease integration in distributions, if would be nice if PHP manual tarballs (http://www.php.net/distributions/manual/) had versions (date they were generated), and were archived for some time...

I'm creating an ebuild (Gentoo Linux) with the "php_manual_<lang>.tar.gz" files (but having versions for the other files -single HTML file and CHM versions- would probably be useful too).

Something like "php_manual_<lang>_YYYYMMDD.tar.gz" would do fine...

If space is a problem, a new versioned archive every month will do perfectly... (while the non-versioned version would always be the lastest possible, as it is now). If possible, they should be kept for a few semesters, like one or two years...

nah, I don't think it worth it.. (old manuals are useless anyway)
Gentoo should rely only on its mirrors for such revision tracking *or* create a php-manual-cvs package, for example.

Yeah, but they provide some stability (networkless installations, install cds) and security (hashes/signatures)...

Anyone serious about PHP would anyway update the manual regularly... but an old manual is not useless, if surely not the best option...

It means more work for maintainers in every distributions... (not that much, most probably, but this would still be redundant).

This is what I just did (https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=126507), but it sure would have been easier if there were version numbers :)

The previous Gentoo ebuilds for the manual, used mirrored snapshots... official maintainers probably will do the same with newer snapshots... (though the last snapshots date back to 2005-08-22, which is why I wanted to help...).


Anyway, I'm not the Gentoo official maintainer for the PHP manual, so I won't insist.
