Here is the backtrace...got this from someone else, but have seen the same
segfault myself in php4b3...

I can't figure out why #2 (and #3?) cause a segfault?

OK, this is not a PHP bug per-se.
Still, I'm wondering if there is not some way the PHP can handle this.
