I have version of GD - 2.0.33 when supported gif function.
at compile php-4.1.1 result for gif is: 

checking for gdImageCreateFromGif in -lgd... no
checking for gdImageGif in -lgd... no


in my libs dir, have new files from gd-2.0.33.

Expected result:

Obviously your external gd lib does NOT have gif support.
Just use the bundled library. It's much safer.
