Configuring libtool

Works for me. I cannot reproduce it. Please rm -rf php4 and get a fresh checkout.

The problem was to use --enable-static and --enable-shared.
Not using these two switches made a successful compile.

What are these switches supposed to do and why don't they
work (yet???).

There have been a lot of changes in the build system since then.
Please try PHP 4.0.1 which will be released tomorrow and open a new bug report if the problem persists.
