in the docs for Strings:
http://www.php.net/manual/language.types.string.php3

There is a very relevant typo in the notation for "here docs".  The documentation says to use the >>> character sequence, when really it should be the <<< sequence.

This was fixed in CVS a couple of weeks ago--online docs just aren't
updated yet.
