When I link php4 as module with apache 1.3.11 liker shows that 

/usr/ccs/bin/ld: Unsatisfied symbols:
   gdImageGif (code)
   gdImageCreateFromGif (code)
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
*** Error exit code 1

Stop.

Gd library no longer supports gif format. Instead it supports png images.

This has been fixed in CVS a while ago. Please upgrade PHP.
