PHP is sane and operational w/o GD support.
installed gd-1.7.3 (with png, sans gif support) ok
but adding --with-gd to PHP, and we get dumplicate
symbols twix libgd (gd.o) and finction/gd.c at
line 291: gdImageColorResolve() 

PHP cfg is stripped to minimum:
./configure --enable-discard-path \
