Alt-S is (at least by me much and blindly used) short cut for acessing the address field to type in a new address in Internet Explorer and should not be redefined as short cut to the search window in php doc. 

Searching is Ctrl-F usually anyway so why don't use Alt-F for this!

Sorry, yes, sorry once more I DO use IE, I know I be burned alive for that sin. But then. I do web sites for ordinary users.

Anyway, php is a delight and the site is matching up to that, so I thought this was below expectation.

Obviously, yes, with english browsers I guess it is (I use a German one, there it's Alt-D).

Well, sorry, so Alt-F won't work either. 

I would maintain the original point, to change it to SOMETHING else, though, as Alt-S is really the only shortcut I press without thinking.
German IE has Alt-S, -D, -B, -A, -F, -X, -? defined for Menus and the Address field.

Well, it is very hard to find a 'proper' access key as even if you only consider English versions of popular browsers, a lot of keys are already used. See

Now add in all different language variant and you can get an idea of why we are not choosing some less obvious combination.

I guess you should take it completely out then, as the article you posted concludes as preferrable solution, too.

I see Alt-S is not even listed in the article, so it seems futile to search a "free" key.

Alternatively, I think, in the context, Alt-F, overriding the file menu access, might make a sense as a Feature.

In the context of browsing that pages it is very rare that you access the file menu. If you know Alt-F, you know Ctrl-S, too, and what else would you need from the file menu? (It's book marks (Favorites) in German by the way).

Alt-S, you remember, was an address field short cut, very likely to be used in the context - simply to go somewhere else after reading.

Alt-S is mentioned on that page, and its usage in Win IE is not described. I have no Windows to test, so I assume Alt-S is only reserved for the address field in German IEs. That means it does not warrant the modification of our accesskey IMHO.

Alt + S could be used in a number of ways - with more extensions being built for Mozilla & Firefox etc, keystroke commands become less and less available. One of the continuing problems with accesskeys is that they override browser/extension behaviours. As an example, I use Sage integrated in Firefox for reading RSS/Atom feeds. Alt + S is the keystroke to view/hide the Sage Sidebar. The S accesskey overrides the sidebar, hijacking my keystroke. 

In all cases we recommend using numbers for accesskeys (although they are not without their problems either), if at all...
