If one doesn't have automake installed, attempts to run phpize  just emit "/usr/local/bin/phpize[57]: aclocal: not found", which isn't particularly helpful.

It'd be helpful to check to see if aclocal is installed before trying to execute it, ideally emitting a useful error message if it's not there.
