ok, but with the latest php5 snapshot I got the following error with "./configure --with-config-file-path=/etc --without-mysql --with-mysqli=/usr/local/mysql/bin/mysql_config --with-apxs=/usr/local/apache/bin/apxs"

Do you have Debian package libxml2-dev installed?
That or libexpat1-dev is required.

the following packages are installed....
Version of libxml2 on system is 2.4.12-1.
Source: expat - Version: 1.95.2-6

Be sure to have the developers' version of libxml2.
That is package name: libxml2-dev 
Alternatively you can force php5 to use Expat instead
by specifying --lib-expat-dir=/usr
(or whatever the prefix for expat is).
