Make fails with the following:

ext/ctype/ctype.lo: file not recognized: File truncated
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [libphp4.la] Error 1

This occurs with either

./configure --with-apxs=/usr/local/apache/bin/apxs
./configure --with-apxs2=/usr/local/apache2/bin/apxs

but not ./configure

This is in an attempt to get php to load with apache2.045, where I get an error:
./apachectl start
httpd: module "/usr/src/build/228709-i386/BUILD/php-4.2.2/sapi/apache2filter/sapi_apache2.c" is not compatible with this version of Apache (found 20020628, need 20020903).
Please contact the vendor for the correct version.

Other posts indicated that this might be fixed in 4.3.2RC2

When you really use the right PHP version it works fine.
And in any case: Not php bug at all.
