I have Oracle 9 installed. Compiles fine with Oracle 8.
I get the following when I use --enable-oci8.

Undefined                       first referenced
 symbol                             in file
OCIEnvNlsCreate                     ext/oci8/oci8.o
OCINlsCharSetNameToId               ext/oci8/oci8.o
ld: fatal: Symbol referencing errors. No output written to sapi/cli/php
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

To be more exact:

Oracle 9.0.1.3.0

Apparently, these functions are only available in Oracle 9.2
<http://www.csis.gvsu.edu/GeneralInfo/Oracle/server.920/a96529/ch8.htm>.

If you can't upgrade to 9.2, you could probably find the line

#define HAVE_OCI9 1

in the configure script and change it to

#undef HAVE_OCI9

This HAVE_OCI9 is only used to make use of OCINlsCharSetNameToId() and OCIEnvNlsCreate(), so there should not be any other drawbacks.
