For compiling PHP for Apache 2.0.39 compile stops with:
make[3]: Entering directory `/usr/src/php-4.2.1/sapi/apache2filter'
/bin/sh /usr/src/php-4.2.1/libtool --silent --mode=compile gcc  -I. -I/usr/src/php-4.2.1/sapi/apache2filter -I/usr/src/php-4.2.1/main -I/usr/src/php-4.2.1 -I/usr/local/apache2/include -I/usr/src/php-4.2.1/Zend -I/usr/src/imap-2001a/c-client -I/usr/local/include/mysql -I/usr/src/php-4.2.1/ext/xml/expat  -D_REENTRANT -I/usr/src/php-4.2.1/TSRM -g -O2 -pthread -DZTS -prefer-pic  -c php_functions.c
php_functions.c:93:27: missing binary operator before '!'
make[3]: *** [php_functions.lo] Error 1

For Apache 1.0 compile finishes OK. Configure used:
./configure --with-apxs2=/usr/local/apache2/bin/apxs

Thank you for your bug report. This issue has already been fixed
in the latest released version of PHP, which you can download at 
http://www.php.net/downloads.php
