In PHP 4.1.2 (not tested on other versions), calling mysql_real_escape_string fails w/ message:

"Call to undefined function: mysql_real_escape_string() in ..."

It is added in 4.3.0 and the version info hasn't been updated on the site yet.

Documentation problem. It should be stated on the manual page.
