This has been a problem in 4.1.0 and 4.1.2.  A simple <?php session_start(); ?> will crash Apache.exe.

OS: Windows XP Pro (I suspect this will happen with any version of Windows)
Server:  Apache 1.3.2
PHP:  4.1.2, running as module

This is very likely to be caused by an incorrect session.save_path.
There's already a report about that.
Please reopen if that's not the case.

This bug has been fixed in CVS.
