On apache make, it craps out during including the static php module, with an error about mysql's library file:

libmysqlclient.a(my_compress.o): In function my_uncompress and my_compress, undefined reference to 'uncompress' and 'compress'

./configure --with-apache=../apache_1.3.22 --with-gd=/usr/local --with-mysql=/usr/local/mysql

Add --with-zlib to your config line.
