The new dba code can not be disabled.
It does not compile on RH 5.2 Linux with gdbm.

Manually editing config.h and setting DBA_DBM to 0 fixed the problem.
dba.c gets confused because configure detects DBA_GDBM, DBA_NDBM and DBA_DBM.

With DBA_DBM forced to 0 everything seems fine (and the old dbm code continues to work).

Yeah, we are aware of this one.  You can use --disable-dba for now.  It'll get cleaned up before release.
