If variables are supposed to be case-insensitive I would expect the referencing behavior to follow as well.

I'd love to see this fixed before 4.0.6 :-)

Variable names in PHP are case-sensitive:

http://www.php.net/manual/en/language.variables.php

Function names aren't. (this will propably change in future)
