I have: FreeBSD-FreeTDS-MSSQL 7.0
This line
mssql_query("SELECT * FROM table WHERE field='national characters'")
dont normal work

function ascci2unicode() in FreeTDS-driver is not good!!!

This is not related to the mssql extension. You are using the sybase extension.

Can you
  - try this with a newer version of freetds
  - try this with PHP 4.1.1

and see if the problem still exists...
