Which glibc do you have?

ls -l /lib/*libc-*

And what kind of system do you have?
As this works fine on my RedHat 6.[12] install.

My lib version is this,

/lib/libc-2.1.3.so

and I'm using RedHat 6.1

This is definately not bug in PHP. There is something
really broken in your system.

The latest version of PHP (4.05) works perfectly fine.  The configuration
and compilation scripts run without any errors or "hangs".  Weird.
