The link on this page says the $maxlifetime variable is populated via session.gc_lifetime.  The proper configuration variable is session.gc_maxlifetime.  The link does go to the proper page, but I was initially searching in php.ini for gc_lifetime which doesn't exist.

This bug has been fixed in the documentation's XML sources. Since the
online and downloadable versions of the documentation need some time
to get updated, we would like to ask you to be a bit patient.
