Description:
------------
Summary
-------

By correctly crafting their input to `unserialize` an attacker can cause the
`array` attibute of a SPL `ArrayObject` to be destroyed and not reinitialised.
The `array` attribute is a `zval`, which after destruction will contain a number
of dangling pointers. An attacker can trigger this bug and likely cause the
deallocated attributes of the `zval` to be reallocated and initialized with data
that they control. The outcome of this is that `spl_array_object->array` points
to a forged `zval` structure and, as shown in prior research, an attacker likely
has many paths from there towards code execution.

This bug is similar in nature to #70068 (CVE-2015-6832) and so this report
provides the essential details without delving too much into how an attacker
could leverage the issue. If further information is required, please ask.

Impact
------

This vulnerability can likely be leveraged to achieve code execution. Any
application that calls `unserialize` on user provided data is potentially
vulnerable.

Patch
-----

There are two patches attached.

One re-adds a check that was present in versions prior to 7.0, which prevents a
"r"/reference type in a serialized object from referring to itself. I am
presuming `php_var_unserialize_ex` is intended to guarantee a post-condition like
"A return value of 1 indicates that the first argument has been initialized to a
correctly deserialized zval", as it did in versions prior to 7.0.

The other patch modifies `SPL_METHOD(Array, unserialize)` to correctly adhere to
what I am presuming is a pre-condition of `php_var_unserialize_ex`. Namely, "The
first argument will point to a zval which is correctly initialised and safe to
use".

It's worth noting that either of these patches on their own will prevent this
particular bug, but both are, in my opinion, necessary to help prevent
regressions.

Without the first one then callers to `php_var_unserialize_ex` have no
guarantees that the first argument will contain a valid `zval` representing the
result of unserializing the provided string, even if 1 is returned. Without the
second patch then this same call-site to `php_var_unserialize_ex` will run the
risk in the future of again becoming a potential source of insecurity if there
is ever a regression, or new problem, introduced in `php_var_unserialize_ex`,
which results in 1 being returned without the first argument being correctly
initialised.

1781         if (!php_var_unserialize(&intern->array, &p, s + buf_len, &var_hash)) {
1782             goto outexcept;
1783         }

File: ext/standard/var_unserializer.re

513
514         if (var_hash && (*p)[0] != 'R') {
515                 var_push(var_hash, rval);
516         }

On line 1780 of `ext/spl/spl_array.c` the `zval` `intern->array` is destroyed
and its contained HashTable is deallocated. Its address is then passed as the
first argument to `php_var_unserialize`, which eventually finds its way into the
`rval` variable in `php_var_unserialize_ex`. The `var_push` function then pushes
this value to the `var_hash` datastructure, which is used to maintain references
to previously unserialized objects.

I believe the assumption made pertaining to the safety of calling
`php_var_unserialize` with a destroyed `zval` is that even though `var_hash`
will be used to store this value, before `php_var_unserialize` returns the
`zval` will be reinitialised. As it turns out, this assumption isn't true.

File: ext/standard/var_unserializer.re

548 "r:" iv ";"             {
549         zend_long id;
550
551         *p = YYCURSOR;
552         if (!var_hash) return 0;
553
554         id = parse_iv(start + 2) - 1;
555         if (id == -1 || (rval_ref = var_access(var_hash, id)) == NULL) {
556                 return 0;
557         }
558
559         if (Z_ISUNDEF_P(rval_ref) || (Z_ISREF_P(rval_ref) &&
Z_ISUNDEF_P(Z_REFVAL_P(rval_ref)))) {
560                 ZVAL_UNDEF(rval);
561                 return 1;
562         }
563
564         ZVAL_COPY(rval, rval_ref);
565
566         return 1;
567 }

If the type being unserialized is a "r"/reference type then the above code will
be executed. The `id` variable is the index in the `var_hash` to the object we
wish to reference. There is no check to ensure that the ID isn't of the object
which was just pushed to the `var_hash` on line 515, as mentioned above. In
other words, by providing the correct index we can ensure that `rval_ref` and
`rval` both reference the destroyed `zval`, `intern->array`.

`ZVAL_COPY(rval, rval_ref)` is then effectively a no-op in terms of
reinitialising `intern->array` (although because it does cause some heap
corruption as it increments the `refcount` of the deallocated `HashTable` and
that field now corresponds with heap meta-data). This problem does not seem to
effect versions earlier than 7.0, as when handling "r"/reference types the code
prevents the value just pushed to `var_hash` from being used as the referenced
object. e.g. directly after line 557 above, something like the following exists:

if (*rval == *rval_ref) return 0;

After the above code is executed, on line 566 `php_var_unserialize` returns into
`SPL_METHOD(Array, unserialize)` and `intern->array` remains in its destroyed
state (complete with dangling pointers), while the heap is corrupted due to the
modifications performed to by ZVAL_COPY to the memory which had been returned to
the allocator.

Providing the following input string to `unserialize` demonstrates the issue,
while also triggering a segmentation fault.

Note the address of the `zval` itself, 0xf605e3c0, as well as the child object
contained within it, 0xf6056270. We have hit a breakpoint at the line
`zval_ptr_dtor(&intern->array);`. If we set a breakpoint on the _efree_48, and
step over, we see the child object being returned to the heap.

503	{

...

As described in the bug description, `rval` and `rval_ref` end up both referring
to the `intern->array` `zval`.

(gdb)
564		ZVAL_COPY(rval, rval_ref);
(gdb) p/x rval
$4 = 0xf605e3c0
(gdb) p/x rval_ref
$5 = 0xf605e3c0

And intern->array still references the deallocated child object.

(gdb) p *rval
$6 = {value = {lval = -167419280, dval = 2.0392796762657958e-314, counted = 0xf6056270, str = 0xf6056270, arr = 0xf6056270, obj = 0xf6056270, res = 0xf6056270,
    ref = 0xf6056270, ast = 0xf6056270, zv = 0xf6056270, ptr = 0xf6056270, ce = 0xf6056270, func = 0xf6056270, ww = {w1 = 4127548016, w2 = 0}}, u1 = {v = {type = 7 '\a',
      type_flags = 28 '\034', const_flags = 0 '\000', reserved = 0 '\000'}, type_info = 7175}, u2 = {var_flags = 0, next = 0, cache_slot = 0, lineno = 0, num_args = 0,
    fe_pos = 0, fe_iter_idx = 0, access_flags = 0}}

We can see that the first field of the child object, the refcount, has been
corrupted by the process of returning it to the heap. When it is returned to the
heap this field is overwritten by a pointer to another heap chunk.

(gdb) p/x *rval->value->counted
$9 = {gc = {refcount = 0xf60562a0, u = {v = {type = 0x1, flags = 0x0, gc_info = 0x8000}, type_info = 0x80000001}}}

And as mentioned above, the ZVAL_COPY in turn corrupts this heap metadata by
treating it as if it was still a reference counter, and incrementing it.

(gdb) n
566		return 1;
(gdb) p/x *rval->value->counted
$10 = {gc = {refcount = 0xf60562a1, u = {v = {type = 0x1, flags = 0x0, gc_info = 0x8000}, type_info = 0x80000001}}}

The corruption/confusion created by the above sequence of events will eventually
lead to a segmentation fault.

(gdb) c
Continuing.

From an attackers point of view the remaining work is to get the the deallocated
child object reallocated using data which they control and then to trigger its
use. As this bug is similar in nature to a variety of others previously
reported, and in particular to CVE-2015-6832, I have not included a trigger for
this outcome. If one is required, let me know.
