How did you build/install PHP?

Assuming you compiled yourself, does adding --with-libexpat-dir (with the right prefix, if necessary) per https://trac.macports.org/ticket/28249 fix the issue?

PHP is installed via "sudo port install php56" and the WDDX Extension is installed via "sudo port install php56-wddx".
