Hello, everybody.

I'm trying to configure my PHP-FPM pool to log every request along with the time 
taken to serve the request, but 
it always give me astronomical durations which are impossible (for example, 3E6 
seconds for a request served in 
less than 100 ms). Trying to find if the problem comes from the date/time 
management, I modified my access 
format to include both request reception time and request writing time, and, 
with access.format set to "[%T] 
[%t] %r%Q%q => %{mili}d", I saw these results :

As you can see, not only %t returns a wrong date, but this wrong date seems to 
interfere with %{mili}d.

Hi

We just experienced the same problem. After some research we found that this 
only happens if we use the fastcgi_finish_request() function. Once we stopped 
using this function, the problem disappeared. When we readded the function, the 
problem appeared again. So the relation between this bug and the 
fastcgi_finish_request() function was quite consistent.

I've also seen that in the file /sapi/fpm/fpm/fpm_request.c there is a function 
called fpm_request_finished(). According to the phases of the request handling, 
this one is supposed to be called at last, and it does sopme cleanup like the 
following:

224     memset(&proc->accepted, 0, sizeof(proc->accepted));
225     proc->accepted_epoch = 0;

Now my guess is that if we use fastcgi_finish_request() inside the PHP code, 
this C function fpm_request_finished() is called and resets the prod-
>accepted_epoch time. Hence that Bug.

Hi

In the meantime I've found that the PHP function fastcgi_finish_request calls fcgi_close() at 
/sapi/fpm/fpm/fpm_main.c:1482. fcgi_close() calls fpm_request_finished() at /sapi/fpm/fpm/fastcgi.c:753 and 
then the fpm_request_finished() function resets the proc->accepted_epoch to 0.
But the fpm_log_write() function is only called after the execution of the whole PHP script is finished. So 
at that time, the proc->accepted_epoch has been reset by fpm_request_finished() already.

I didn't come up with a nice way to fix this. I've only seen that there is an init_request_info() function 
being called in the beginning of every request, so wouldn't it maybe make more sense to reset the 
accepted_epoch in that one at the beginning of every request, instead of using the fpm_request_finished()?

At the moment we just stopped using fastcgi_finish_request() in the PHP code, that way there is no problem.

Well, I didn't double check... The problem concerning the time taken to serve the 
request seems to have vanished. The bug still exists, but, at least, %t doesn't 
alter %{mili}d results anymore.

I've seen the exact same thing on Solaris with nginx as frontend.
For us it happens when nginx uses keepalives to the fastcgi backend. Turning fastcgi keepalives off resolves this weird behaviour. Makes the logs much better readable but sacrifices some performance.
Should really be fixed as otherwise the access log is pretty much useless in these scenarios when you can't rely on the logged timestamps and time taken to serve the request.

I don't think corruption is connected with nginx or keepalive. I'd assume that it 
happens on the late stage when your script is about to finish and just washed out 
by restarting PHP process. With keepalive you are entering the next request with 
already corrupted time value.

Well, just speculating :) At least, we see the same behaviour with the upstream 
keepalive disabled...

Note that this bug still exists in PHP 5.5.0 as well as 5.4.17 (testing on FreeBSD 
9.1).

Fix proposed by Mauro Stettler (thanks!), moving the accepted_epoch cleanup code 
from fpm_request_finished() [fpm_request.c:209] to fpm_request_reading_headers() 
[fpm_request.c:61] solves the problem for me, not sure about how correct this 
solution is. Any input on this by fpm developers?
