The documentation says that an UnexpectedValueException is thrown if this call fails, however on PHP5.2 a RuntimeException is also/instead thrown.

It will throw the following exceptions depending on versions:

  5.0.x throws Exception
  5.1.x throws RuntimeException
  5.2.x throws RuntimeException
  5.3.x throws UnexpectedValueException
  5.4.x throws UnexpectedValueException

This bug has been fixed in the documentation's XML sources. Since the
online and downloadable versions of the documentation need some time
to get updated, we would like to ask you to be a bit patient.

Thank you for the report, and for helping us make our documentation better.

A changelog section has been added to this page describing the changes over time 
with regards to exceptions.
