I compiled PHP as an Apache module. It seems to work OK, but only with the compiled-in default values; php.ini has no effect. I used the following when i did the PHP configure:

./configure --with-mysql=/usr/local/mysql --with-config-file-path=/etc/httpd/php.ini --with-apache=/usr/src/apache_1.3.12 --enable-track-vars

phpinfo() shows the ini file being /etc/httpd/php.ini (as configured), but changes to that file are not being read, even after restarting the web server. Other people i've asked for help on this issue have encountered a similar problem and have worked around it by setting lots of php variables in httpd.conf, but it is my understanding that php.ini should be read (otherwise what is the point of having it?) and such hacks should not be necessary.

Thanks for the great work so far.

i had a similar problem yesterday (bug #6302)
and found out that php.ini worked as expected
when i started apache in single-process mode
with option -X for debugging reasons but that
it totaly ignored php.ini in its normal
multiprocess mode of operation

could you please try if you get the same effect
when starting apache with 'httpd -X' ?

or perhaps it is related to

  --with-config-file-path=/etc/httpd/php.ini

what if you try

  --with-config-file-path=/etc/httpd

instead ?

(can't try it on the system i had the trouble
with as i do not have enough rights over there)

Config file is _path_, not a filename. not /etc/httpd,/php.ini
