When attempting to narrow down some odd page speed issues, we noticed that it seems like the first object of a certain size threshold is slow, but all objects of that size or larger afterwards on a page are quick.

The attached code sample shows that when the a array is small, the q array takes ~90ms. When you increase the a array size it then becomes the slow get and the q is fast. 

The strangest part is that if first object is just big enough, then they are both fast??

Any help/insight on this would be greatly appreciated.

Environment is : 
FreeBSD 8.1
Lighttpd + spawn-fcgi
php : 5.3.5
pecl-memcached: 1.0.2
