Description:
------------
Main Israeli mirror - il.php.net - is not operational for ages now.
php.net redirects to il2.php.net
If the old "il.php.net" mirror is not coming back, why not alias or rename il2 to
il?

Test script:
---------------
$ nslookup
> il.php.net.

Expected result:
----------------
The URL http://il.php.net/ should be operational.

Actual result:
--------------
il.php.net is not resolvable.

$ nslookup
> server 194.90.1.5
Default server: 194.90.1.5
Address: 194.90.1.5#53
> il.php.net.
Server:         194.90.1.5
Address:        194.90.1.5#53

** server can't find il.php.net.: NXDOMAIN
> il2.php.net.
Server:         194.90.1.5
Address:        194.90.1.5#53

Non-authoritative answer:
il2.php.net     canonical name = php.off.co.il.
Name:   php.off.co.il
Address: 212.150.176.149

We do not alias or rename mirrors and will not do so. It would break existing
links.

Mirrors become unavailable for a variety of reasons, including technical issues
or the maintainer's unwillingness to continue to provide service. We do not
always have control over this, as is the case in IL.PHP.NET.

Aside from perhaps a few broken links, there is absolutely no good reason to
change an operational mirror just to remove the '2' from its CNAME.

You do not necessarily need to rename il2->il (as this might also break some
links / bookmarks - i totally agree...
)
il CNAME does not exist right now in the zone
You can simply add a new CNAME to point to same address, will this break
anything?

when people type in an address into their addressbar, they will have a hard time
guessing they need to add a number after their country code

IMHO every country you put a mirror in deserves to have a <country-code>.php.net
CNAME as a main mirror OR (better) a dynamic one being a fastest / least heavy
loaded one...

The problem with that solution is - and this is not your fault by any means - you
don't know how it works on the backend. Believe it or not, yes, it can cause
issues, at least in its present state. It's an imperfect system, and certainly
is a work in progress, but the changes you're suggesting simply cannot and will
not be employed at this time. However, your other bug report about IL2 being
slow is resulting in action.

Thank you for your suggestions and reports.
