The issue of closed bug 45439 is still unfixed. When trusting the documentation the configure option --with-kadm5 is rejected:

Notice: Following unknown configure options were used:

--with-kadm5=shared

You need to install KADM5 from PECL and run buildconf before the --with-kadm5 configure option will be available.

Yes, that is the point. This should be documented in http://www.php.net/manual/en/kadm5.installation.php, but is not. The radius extension, e.g., is documented this way. The hint in http://www.php.net/manual/en/extensions.membership.php is subject to be overseen IMHO.
