When using mySQL functions - php4 crashes. The script ran fine under php3 - same compiling options as php4. 

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

Is this still happening?  Try a recent snapshot from http://snaps.php.net and let us know, please.  If it is, please include your PHP configure switches in your response.
