Crash when downloading url via readfile or file_ge_contents

I tried it on 2 machines.
Windows XP sp 2. 
php as apache module or cgi - it doesn't matter.

4.4.1 works correctly.

Reproduce code:
---------------
<?php

readfile("http://www.microsoft.com/");

?>

Expected result:
----------------
html page

Actual result:
--------------
crash
