when connecting mysql with php getting an error that call to undefined connection mysql_connect

Reproduce code:

$link = mysql_connect('localhost', 'mysql_user', 'mysql_password');
if (!$link) {
    die('Could not connect: ' . mysql_error());
}
echo 'Connected successfully';
mysql_close($link);
?> 

Expected result:
----------------
connected successfully

Actual result:
--------------
connected successfully
