The *time_r functions on HP-UX have different parameters from what
is assumed in php4.0b4. This causes compilation to fail. php4.0b3 is ok.

e.g.  from  man asctime_r on HP-UX:

int asctime_r(const struct tm *timeptr, char *buffer, int buflen);

It compiles, when all *time_r defines are commented in php_config.h, as e.g.

/*#define HAVE_ASCTIME_R 1 */

after  ./configure
