For any version of imap/c-client post-2000, the version information is given as "2000" in phpinfo() (i.e. using imap-2004a still shows the version as "2000" in phpinfo()).

You need to tell the c-client author to put some macro in the header files and/or function which can be used to determine the c-client version in question. At present we just make wild guesses on some know differences between releases.
