PHP won't compile under Compaq TruUnix (Digital Unix) 5.0
I'm using apache 1.3.9

You need bison to compile 3.0.12. This will be fixed in the upcoming 3.0.13 release. In the meantime, either install GNU bison (<ftp://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/bison/>) or use a snapshot of PHP 3 (<http://va.php.net/~sas/snapshots/>).
