PHP4 is not able to (or simply does not) detect user aborts. Whenever the client stops loading a page, PHP keeps running.

The default behaviour of PHP has always been to ignore user aborts. Read the "connection handling" chapter in the manual for more details on how to get PHP to stop executing on a user abort.
