Version 1.3 with FreeType support

PHP3 compiled and linked with gd-1.5:
Version 1.6+ with FreeType support

gd itself does not report its version number,
and so the version is hardcoded into the php
code

current versions of php 3 & 4 report 
"Version x.y or later", where x.y is the
minumum version supporting all the features
that have been reported by configure
