Description:
------------
Everytime I visit the php.net website the language is German.

First: I visit from Holland [ip: 62.45.142.xx], so, maybe you should serve the page in Dutch.

Following, I set my language _I_ prefer in my browser: Accept-Language	en-us,en;q=0.5

You should serve this imho.

Thanks

Oh yeah, I forget, it's only the case when i directly go to a function with (e.g) www.php.net/array

See http://php.net/my for an explanation on how the language selection system works. You probably have a remembered German last language for some reason. Please provide feedback if you still think there is some bug on the site.
[2003-11-21 18:31 UTC] mmeijers at gmx dot net
It has come this way; And I certainly didn't set it like that!

There must be some kind of misconfigure in figuring out in which language I want initially.
 [2003-11-22 05:36 UTC] goba@php.net
I have asked you to visit the My PHP.net page. What can you see there in the list of languages? Do you still get the pages in German for URL shortcuts?
[2003-11-24 03:08 UTC] mmeijers at gmx dot net
Somehow everything is normal now. I really don't know, how it came that the language switched to German.

www.php.net/my gave:
--
Your preferred language Not Set
Last seen language en
Your Accept-Language browser setting en-us,en;q=0.5
The mirror's default language nl
Default en
--

What should help is giving a link on the mainpage to changing the default language (to the http://www.php.net/my you gave me) in the layout somewhere.
 [2003-11-24 06:20 UTC] goba@php.net
Since you have these correct language values set in My PHP.net, do you still experience the problem of getting a manual in German?
 [2003-12-01 03:15 UTC] sniper@php.net
No feedback was provided. The bug is being suspended because
we assume that you are no longer experiencing the problem.
If this is not the case and you are able to provide the
information that was requested earlier, please do so and
change the status of the bug back to "Open". Thank you.

Something is f*cked up really bad, I also suddenly got all german pages. Please just feed me what I ask for: I say www.php.net and just want English. Computers thinking for you, that's exactly the point where you don't want them to go. People visiting this site are smart enough to make their own choices. Coincidentally the mirror you bounce me to (somewhere in the Netherlands I presume) had some misconfiguration a few weeks ago giving just errors. Then I say www.php.net and your stupid 'smart' script bounces me back where I DON'T want to be. Please don't become Microsoft. Register Globals was a mistake but I'll forgive. Trying to think for me I will not.

Besides the fact that the systems thinks I'm a german, the (Dutch) translations are generally of very poor quality. I have to translate back to english to understand what it's telling me.

Please get rid of this system and make a flashy button: 'View php.net in Dutch' when detecting I'm =probably= Dutch.

Here's the output of the php.net/my thing:
---------
My PHP.net

This page allows you to customize the PHP.net site to some degree to your own liking.

These settings will be active on all official PHP.net mirror sites, and are stored using cookies, so you need to have cookies enabled to let your settings work.
Preferred language

If you use a shortcut or search for a function, the language used is determined by checking for the following settings. The list is in priority order, the first is the most important. Normally you don't need to set your preferred language, as your last seen language is always remembered, and is a good estimate on your preferred language most of the time.
Your preferred language
Last seen language de
Your Accept-Language browser setting en-us,en;q=0.5
The mirror's default language nl
Default en

These settings are only overriden in case you have passed a language setting URL parameter or POST data to a page or you are viewing a manual page in a particular language. In these cases, the explicit specification overrides the language selected from the above list.

The language setting is honored when you use an URL shortcut, when you start a function list search on a non-manual page, when you visit the manual download or language selection pages, etc.
Your country

The PHP.net site and mirror sites try to detect your country using the Directi Ip-to-Country Database. This information is used to mark the events in your country specially and to offer close mirror sites if possible on the download page and on the mirror listing page.
We detected that you are from Netherlands

I would say I once got a google hit or something that was german, and ever since you think I a German.

Did I say this system is stupid? It is. Please remove it. It might sound rude what I'm saying here but it took me too long to finally figure this thing out.

Regards, Maarten

Maarten, it would be easy to convince us that thinking for you is a mistake, if you would show sings that you at least try to think for yourself. You have intelligently copied the My PHP.net page, which means you are at least not on a completely wrong road. But it would be nice if you would take the time and read the text, which you might guess we prepared for you to get informed.

Since you clicked on a German link, our site expected that you like (understand) German text, and display the contents in German since then. Why this happens, how you can override this (including the automatic mirror selection) is all explained in the text you copy-pasted. What if you start thiking for yourself and read?

Please get back to us if you still have problems after setting your options on the My PHP.net page.

There IS some issue with language. For me pages showed in
french many times, today: spanish. I was wondering, what the
hack... (coming from germany, using the de. mirror, having
my browser to prefer english, second best: german, it is
really not obvious, why the page should be spanish).

Maybe I followed a google link with embedded spanish-
setting, some time.

Only today I found the MY-page where I can change the
language.

You should consider:
1) accept lang only as POST, not GET
2) make it easier to find the my site (given that someone
does not start on the starpage but comes directly to /
function/whatever.php)

Obviously Facebook, in Portuguese, English, German, French, or Futurama Alien
Language 2, is not of our concern. And, given that this report hasn't been
touched in over six years aside from the nonsense comment today, we'll consider
it closed.
